Barbara Grygutis, The Illuminated Page

2004, Central Park Library, Santa Clara, CA

"The Illuminated Page" is a Gateway designed to create a welcoming entry in the form of an arbor along the pedestrian entry path leading from the sidewalk starting at Homestead Blvd. to the primary library entrance. The gateway form is inspired by the delicate motion created from the turning of a book page. The sculptural units take on the form of turning pages with the sequence of arches convex at an angle to the oncoming traffic and clearly visible from the street.

The curved sculptural units are fabricated with perforated metal wrapped around a metal armature. Within each cage exists a world of floating books, disks, computers and plant forms. These forms will symbolize the merging of the natural world within the world of the mind.
