Jim Goldberg, One Chapter from the New Europeans

2003 -2006, Mother Jones Magazine, San Francisco, CA

Two photographs and large collage are part of a much larger, ongoing project on race. In 2003, in association with the 2003 Olympics and the Greek Hellenic Cultural Heritage Society, Jim began photographing the diverse immigrant communities in Athens who live often on the margins of society; among them people from Iraq, Somalia, the Ukraine, Albania, Russia, Poland, Nigeria, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Egypt, Bangladesh, Pakistan, China, and the Philippines. Despite the harsh realities of their lives, theirs is a story of hope and heroism.
